Sony TVs Get Lollipop Update, but No Marshmallow

For Sony’s customers in Europe, expect an OTA update to be hitting your TVs soon. It should update your devices from Lollipop 5.0 to 5.1, and it does appear to bring a handful of specific bug fixes as well as some new features. You can read the whole post here. Some of the key fixes:

  • Netflix support for 5.1 Surround Sound
  • HDMI Lip Sync Issues
  • Green Screen Displayed
  • Increased responsiveness

Sony does say that this firmware update will not work on US TVs due to different hardware specifications, so you probably shouldn’t try to flash the update yourself. However, Sony did not give any news about similar US updates nor anything about Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

This might be fixed later this year, as Sony is promising another software update before Christmas to bring more Sony TV-specific features. While they’re adding features, it’s feasible that they update the operating system. You can look at the whole list of upcoming services for Sony’s Android TVs (in the UK). The most interesting ones are:

  • USB hard drive recording (REC)
  • Picture-in-picture
  • Amazon video support for 5.1 Surround Sound
