Live Channels Adds Shortcut to Play Store

Some users last night started to report an apparent server-side change to the Live Channels app that now adds an icon to the Google Play Store. There hasn’t been an update to the app and this icon now shows up for some users.

Google+ user Ed R posted these photos which show this new option being available in the “TV Options” menu. Selecting it sends you to a Google Play category with a handful of supported apps. This is likely a category that’s checking for <uses-feature android:name="android.software.live_tv" />¬†although it’s not showing all of them. Is it because the app must also state android:required="true"? That could be why, although it doesn’t make sense for app listing purposes.

As the change is likely server-side based, this could just be A/B testing and Google will see how this affects the number of downloads of each app. Ideally Google will add support for every Live Channel soon as well as roll out this change everywhere.
