Vizio SmartCast App Adding Google Play Movies & TV

Vizio’s smart TV strategy has been focused around simplicity: just integrating Google Cast. Rather than building their own operating system to find content, anyone can just use their phone and the media apps they already have installed.

Part of this is the SmartCast app, which acts as a single point of curation for media to allow users to quickly discover and play new content on their television. Services like Netflix and Hulu already are supported in this app.

Now, even more content will be accessible in this app thanks to the integration of Google Play Movies & TV. This is Google’s built-in media service which allows you to rent or purchase both movies and TV shows through the Google Play store.

This should provide more value for Vizio TV owners and continue to advertise the existence of Google Play for more than just apps and games. It’s better for one-off pieces of media rather than a flat subscription to Netflix or Hulu.

This integration should happen soon. There has not been any information regarding the other media app Google Play Music. So far, SmartCast is aimed at video services and not music, but that may change.
