Google Play Store Gets New Banner, Squarer Icons

Google has been updating a handful of TV apps with new banners that use the new triangular icons on a white banner. The new banner came to Google Play Movies & TV a while ago, and then very recently to Google Play Games.

Now the banner for the Google Play Store has been updated. Again, it uses the new icon on top of the white banner. As shown in the screenshot above, it looks exactly how you’d expect.

Now, the only app that is missing from the suite is Google Play Music. Since that app recently saw a major update on phones and web, will a TV update come soon? Hopefully, as the current app doesn’t even support podcasts (which was released in April).

Android TV apps use a banner which appear in the launcher. These banners have appeared in the Google Play Store, showing exactly how it’ll look on your homescreen. Now, however, there are a few apps that are showing the app icon instead.

It’s not yet clear if this is intentional or a bug. There doesn’t seem like there’s any correlation between which app is being displayed and which graphic is used.

A while back, Google emailed developers telling them that TV apps must have high-resolution banners and screenshots in the Play Store. It’s possible that some apps haven’t done this, and instead of showing a low-resolution banner, the icon is used instead.

Either way, it looks like Google is beginning to place a bigger emphasis on Android TV again, just in time for Black Friday.
