Al-Jazeera Publishes TV App: Short Documentaries and News

Al-Jazeera, which is a news organization originally from Qatar, has been pushing more content to the US market with short viral videos explaining particular topics and taking a big picture look at the news.

Although Al-Jazeera America was unsuccessful as a TV channel, they are still trying to get engaged with the TV market. They published a TV app last week for Android TV, which followed similar apps for Apple TV and Fire TV.

The layout is pretty simple to navigate, with cards for each piece of media and attractive drop shadows. You can browse each by category and then click on one to start playing.

Each video has related videos below as well as a short summary of what the video is about.

It’s a simple app, and hopefully they can get back into live content with a Live Channel. Their content is fairly addictive on social media thanks to bold text and short videos. I would probably just put on a stream of it and let videos play continuously if I had the choice. As a first version, it’s pretty solid. It’s free to download on Google Play.
