Google Search is a major component of Android TV, allowing users to immediately look for answers, movies, and nearly anything else. However, it does seem at times like Google’s Android TV specific app is lagging behind of its phone app. A recent update to the app does seem to be faster for some users and it also updates the app icon to the new logo which was originally announced several months ago.
Having a new icon for the app really has not been necessary. Users don’t engage with search as an app, and they’d only see it in their list of apps. Consistency is important, and though the rest of the app has been updated with their new visual style, it is nice to have this small thing updated as well.
Another addition, which may not actually be new, is that the usual search text will be replaced with helpful suggestions about what to search for. It also helps users see what types of queries can be accepted. “Superhero Movies”, for example, will return movies in which this is true such as Batman or Avenger movies. These suggestions will only appear and scroll through several suggestions after a period of inactivity on the homescreen.
The app is free to download on Google Play, although it should already be installed on your device.
