tape: German Music Videos and Concerts on your TV

tape brands itself as an app that brings users “the best concerts and other events live” to not just your phone, but other devices in your home. Recently that included Android TV. So we tried it out in order to find out how great of an experience this was for users.

I found that the app seemed to be entirely in German, which confused me. The app description and screenshots on the Google Play Store seem to suggest it was in English. Perhaps this was just a weird dialog message that wasn’t localized, so I pressed “Okay”, agreeing to something. The main activity of the app didn’t seem to be localized either.

The app is fairly straightforward. You can see a row containing popular music videos and the row below is meant for curated, handpicked videos selected by the editors. You can also favorite particular videos and see them as well.

Playback works fine, just as well as you’d expect, although both the videos and the app seemed to be intended for German music. This isn’t necessarily bad, although I did get the wrong idea from the Play Store listing.

If you want to try this out for yourself, the app is free to install on your phone and TV through Google Play.
