Xiaomi’s Mi Box Could Be Released in October, Under $100

While there is growing evidence for a new model of the NVIDIA Shield TV, there is also news about the Mi Box from Xiaomi. TechCrunch reports from a source that the Mi Box will be coming “early Q4” at a price point under $100.

According to a previous story about the device’s box, the device will cost $76 “including coupons”. That may mean the device costs about $100 plus $25 of Google Play credit or some other sort of free content.

The Mi Box passed through the FCC in late July, so it is legally ready for sale in the United States. It’s likely they’ll release the device in the coming months so that they can sell well in holiday sales. This could be either October or November.

Our first impressions of the 4K, HDR capable device were positive. If the box is powerful enough to run high-quality Android games, it would make a very good competitor to the Shield. The Mi Box may not have the gaming focus or the exclusive games from NVIDIA however. It’s also not clear what OS version it will run upon release. Nougat is already available for Android TV, although the Mi Box has been stated to run Marshmallow.

Stay tuned for more information about the Mi Box as we learn it.
