Personally, my family is pretty busy. Each of us has our own things to do each day and when we don’t know each other’s schedule, there can be conflicts and frustration. Five or so years ago I started using Google Calendar to organize our family’s events. Now any of us could add or read the schedule. When I joined my high school drama club, I created a calendar for rehearsals. When I went off to college, I created another calendar for what I did instead of what everyone else was doing. I’ve developed a fondness for digital calendar software and use it frequently.
While it’s easy for everyone to edit their schedule, how about being able to see the schedule? It can be done personally, but I’ve wanted a family size calendar, similar to the wall calendars that used to hang in the kitchen. It would be a central location that we could all use and discuss at the same time, instead of staring at our respective phones.
Having a calendar on my TV has been a small dream of mine, although it may be rather esoteric. Nevertheless, with a little bit of time I’ve managed to get a rough draft of the app working and published on Google Play for your TV (or technically your phone).
The app uses your Google account to pull events. They appear in this agenda view. You can look at all the events in the month and select one to learn more information. By scrolling to the top or bottom (or using the L and R shoulder buttons on a gamepad), you can jump between months.
I have a lot of calendars, some I use and some I don’t. If every family member has one or more calendars, they can easily toggle them on or off in the navigation drawer (by pressing left). This will refresh your event list.
Like all of the ITV Lab apps, the source code is available on GitHub and welcomes contributions from interested developers. This is a rough draft. There’s plenty of bugs that can be found and features that could be added. Having some help is always appreciated.
