Sony’s 2017, 2016 4K HDR Televisions With Android TV Now Compatible With Amazon Echo Devices

Big news for 2017/2016 (sorry 2015) Sony 4K Android TV owners. Sony Electronics announced yesterday that with recent/upcoming firmware updates, Amazon Echo devices can now control 2017 Sony 4K HDR televisions with Android TV. With this update users can ask Alexa to perform basic TV functions such as controlling the TV power, volume, play/pause/stop/fast forward controls, switch inputs and change channels. Nothing overly complex but it gets the job done for now and it might get me to pick up an Echo dot. Speaking of devices the press release says the Echo, Show & Dot are all going to be compatible which makes me wonder about the rest of the Alexa powered devices. Cough cough come on Google time to play catch up, well they will when Google Assistant comes around.

“Alexa, turn on my Living Room TV” or “Alexa, set the volume to 60 on my Kitchen TV” or “Alexa, change channel to CNN on my Bedroom TV.”

All of Sony’s 2017 Android TVs are compatible with Amazon Echo, Echo Show and Echo Dot via a firmware update available in July 2017. Additional 2016 4K HDR televisions with Android TV models are supported as well. For a complete list of supported models see here. One last thing its US Only as of now.
