Stock Android TV Apps Reach 5 Million Downloads, Indicating Total Devices Sold

Looking at the number of downloads in the Play Store for stock Android TV apps, the number of official, activated Android TVs appear to be at least 5 million.

Did you get a new Android TV device this Christmas? A lot has changed to the platform over the past year, and worries of the platform’s death seem to have diminished. In fact, it’s stronger than ever. It seems like a lot of activations have happened over the past week.

Google has not given exact numbers as to how many Android TVs have been purchased and setup by consumers. However, by observing correlated data, one is able to make relatively accurate estimates.

The Leanback Launcher is Google’s official launcher that is available on all Android TVs. In the Play Store, it is restricted to only being available for Android TVs, those that support Leanback. Looking at its download count, it now says 5 – 10 million. Since the Leanback Launcher is on every TV, and it’s marked as being downloaded at least 5 million times, one can reason that there are 5 million or more Android TVs.

This isn’t just a small quirk. Another piece of evidence is the YouTube for Android TV app. Again, this is an app exclusive to Android TVs. It has also crossed the 5 million download mark.

Android TV has slowly evolved and grown more polished as a smart TV platform, and going into the new year with this new threshold crossed spells good news for its future.
