YouTube Red currently the 6th most popular video subscription service

is YouTube’s version of the ad-free, premium subscription service. For $10 per month, users get offline videos, background video playback, no ads, and access to exclusive content. It also gives them unlimited access to the vast collection of music on Google Play Music.

While YouTube Red was only a fairly recent product, it is entering a competitive industry alongside many veteran services. While that may seem intimidating, a recent survey from Digitalsmiths seems to suggest it’s doing well.

From a sample size of 3,114 adults in the US and Canada, there were a number of trends related to video streaming that could be noted. This may not be too large, but it’s likely able to get fairly close to actual numbers. Including Canada in the survey may not be ideal as georestrictions around content may make one service unappealing compared to another per country.

From this data, YouTube Music has already been ranked as the 6th most popular streaming service. The top five are Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu, HBO Now, and Shomi in order.

YouTube Red was launched at the end of October last year. In just under a year it has found a lot of success. With the anniversary coming soon, it seems to be a good time to take stock of its success so far and determine what should be next. However, it seems like the service is pretty safe.

This isn’t close to accurate. I’m a YouTube red subscriber but I have never signed up for it. I signed up for Google play music and got this as a bonus I didn’t even know I was getting at the time. Now I use it everyday but the initial subscription wasn’t intended
