NVIDIA Shield Update 5.1: Rumble Support, Encrypted VP9

You may have gotten a notification on your Shield TV recently about another software update. This would be to Shield Experience 5.1, not to be confused with the Android operating system version 7.0. This is a minor update that brings some of the promises NVIDIA made at their CES keynote.

What’s New?

  • GeForce NOW joins GameStream with support for dual vibration feedback with the new SHIELD controller. Try it out today in games like Tomb Raider, ABZU, and LEGO Star Wars The Force Awakens
  • Amazon Video enchancements for surround sound as well as remote control responsiveness
  • Support for encrypted VP9 with subsampling
  • Enhanced system performance and stability

Presumably this update will be for both the 2015 and 2017 Shield TV. I have received the notification on my 2015 model, and the headlining feature is the rumble addition which is only available on the new NVIDIA Shield controller.

If you had any issues with responsiveness after the last update they probably fixed it. Are you finding anything else new in the update? Let us know in the comments below.
