Do you have your NVIDIA Shield TV hooked up to a 4K TV? You can access lots of ultra-high definition content: Netflix, Vudu, and more. Thus far, Google Play Movies hasn’t supported it. Yet the app is getting an update that will unlock NVIDIA’s high-performance graphics in the devices. Users will be able to take advantage of the 4K movies that are available on Google Play, although it should be noted the cost is much more than a standard definition or high definition movie.
Another big app update is related to the Cast Receiver. It should enable the NVIDIA Shield to receive 4K casted content, allowing users to easily navigate to their content from the phone and watch their movies on the biggest screen in their house in the fullest resolution possible.
I don’t know if these will require the application binaries themselves to be updated. For one or both, the foundation may already be in the software but require a change in Google Play Services or a server. Thus far, any app updates do not seem to be showing up on the Play Store or in APK Mirror. If you see these changes, let us know in the comments below. If I can grab the APKs or screenshots, this post will be amended.
As the hardware is roughly the same in both models, it seems likely that owners of the 2015 and 2017 versions of the Shield TV should be getting these updates.
