Google Search Now Includes Movie Category Suggestions

The Google Search for Android TV app just received an update, to version 2.0.1.112625825. Although there did not appear to be noticeable changes, there is one that does appear to be new. It doesn’t happen with most searches, but searching for a movie will cause Google to show related movies in one of numerous categories.

In this example, searching for “Ant Man” shows users results for other Marvel movies as well as superhero movies in general. This was tested on some other movies. Searching for “Frozen” shows results for Disney and children movies.

While this works well for movies, Google has not applied similar suggestions for other types of media. TV shows will show the cast and some related shows, but not in the same granularity as movies. Music is the same way, showing the artist’s tracks and related artists, but not categories for those genres.

This may be a feature still in development as Google continues to improve their knowledge graph by connecting more things together. Movies is a good place to start as search results for movies make it easy to purchase or rent that movie through Google Play. TV shows may require more commitment to watch a full season and aren’t really things people tend to pick with friends. Music is something that would work well with Google Play Music, but that app hasn’t been updated in a while. (It still uses the older Google logo.)

Is this feature available for anyone else? Are there other types of searches where you get similar types of suggestions? Let us know in the comments below.

If the app hasn’t rolled out to users yet, you can just sideload it through .
